Political analyst reminisces 2016 election set-up that eventually led to the victory of Duterte, Robredo

Political analyst Malou Tiquia was on Facebook observing the happenings in the dispute of those involved in the issue of Scarborough Shoal, when she thought of sharing a piece of her thoughts towards the Philippines’ political system.

According to her, she truly saw the effect of the country’s multi-party system and how it could affect governance and election dynamics.

She says that it started with the team up of Antonio Trillanes IV, Peter Cayetano and Koko Pimentel to go up against then vice president Binay, and then continued on for them playing “key roles in breaking the Vice President count” in the 2016 elections.

The pair up, according to Tiquia is as follows: Roxas-Robredo, Binay-Honasan, Poe-Escudero, Santiago-Marcos, Duterte-Cayetano, and Poe-Trillanes.

According to Tiquia, the Liberal Party’s main intention was to stop Poe and Dutete to get Roxas to win, unfortunately, because the LP was divided, some of them opted for Poe. But amidst that divided, and the resolving of the citizenship issue of Poe, she was still no able to get past Duterte.

More than that, because of Binay and Duterte’s similar experience with Local Government Units, even that audience was divided, as she alleges most of the LGUs voted for Duterte. And even though Cayetano, Pimentel and Trillanes were all part of UNO that Binay headed in 2007, they still switched over to the side of Aquino and the LP.

Ending her post, Tiquia says that Philippine politics has always been prone to manipulation and she’s waiting if the same will still happen.

Interesting to watch the throwing of mud between and among those involved in the Scarborough Shoal and the tit-for-tat exchange by Cayetano and BSA3 and Trillanes and Cayetano.

And that is the problem of our politics and political parties. Everyone is a member of the majority and the opposition is just a company union. In the run up to the 2016 elections and the 2016 LP playbook (that word resonates with LP) were all about that.

It will be remembered that Trillanes, Cayetano and Pimentel made up the trio released by the Aquino government to attack VP Binay. They converted the Senate into a Kangaroo Court for 33 hearings against Binay.

Then Cayetano, Escudero and Trillanes played key roles in breaking the VP count. Who did they took votes from? I will leave it at that and I hope that camp realizes that the China walls ain’t real.

What were the pairings:

1. Roxas-Robredo
2. Binay-Honasan
3. Poe-Escudero (part of LP)
4. Santiago-Marcos
5. Duterte-Cayetano (Marcos was also courting then candidate Duterte)
6. Poe-Trillanes (Trillanes was the one who said they will carry Poe)

Clearly, LP wanted to stop Poe and Duterte so it would just be mano-mano. But Poe jilted Roxas (and some LP went for her). Duterte ran last minute (Poe was being squeezed on cirtizenship), clearly having a good scan of the field (ruling of SC in citizenship did not create the bounce needed for a Poe candidacy to fly). Roxas and Poe are from the same pie. Binay and Duterte came from the same LGU experience. LP was divided. Binay’s vote went to Duterte, especially the LGUs.

Recall that Binay headed the 2007 UNO slate for the opposition against PGMA. Cayetano, Pimentel and Trillanes were part of it. Escudero was also with UNO.

By 2013, Cayetano, Pimentel, Trillanes and Escudero ran under Team Pinoy, a coalition headed by LP.

And you ask why our politics is such? And why syndicates can manipulate the VCM? Will Duterte put an end to these? Hmmm, let us see where the wind blows with the VCM.
