Duterte gave cash assistance to families of Benguet landslide victims

Aside from the cash assistance given by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), President Rodrigo Duterte also gave cash assistance to the families of Itogon, Benguet landslide.

On Monday, when President Duterte visited the location, he met with the families of the victims and during his press briefing President Duterte emphasized the risk of mining.

He remembered when he was a chairperson of the Southern Mindanao regional peace and order council, Duterte relayed his experience on the real dangers of "rich" miners who violate the law.

"I could not even give you the exact number of people who were killed fighter over the tunnels that they built," he said.

At least 35 people was found in the landslide in Itogon on Saturday and continuous retrieval operation is happening.

According to the Facebook post of Special Assistant to the President Christoper "Bong" Go, families received P45,000 each – P25,000 in cash and P25,000 worth of goods and funeral and burial assistance.

Meanwhile, during the press briefing of the President to the families of victims he reiterate the dangers of mining and how these "rich" miners violates the law.

"Itong mga minero, the rich ones, parang their penchant to just violate the law. Because nobody was ever even  arrested. The thing is a... continuous series of violations, they're not arrested. They're just exposed by media -- the enterprising ones -- and they government would just call and investigate, and after that mawala [it goes away]," he said.

"We have to give Mother Earth a respite from the endless digging," he added.

If the President will be asked, he would like to stop mining in the country disregarding the financial benefits of the said business.
