FDCP Chairperson on Duterte kissing controversy: Ang isang babae ay may karapatang gawin ang gusto niya

Liza Diño, Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) Chairperson and member of the Cinemarya executive committee, said that the issue of President Rodrigo Duterte kissing a married Filipina in South Korea is something that should be talked about because people have different opinions.

"Kailangan nating mag-usap kasi iba't-iba talaga ang opinion natin. Merong ibang nagsasabing tama, meron ibang nagsasabing mali…Ang nangyayari sa atin, we impose our own beliefs on people who think differently and I think having these kinds of discussion would allow for a more tolerating atmosphere where we can find safe spaces [to] discuss these issues," said Dino during the launch of Cinemarya.

The Cinemarya is a film festival intended to showcase women empowerment.

"Ang isa nating [dapat i-consider] ay ang isang babae ay may karapatang mag-isip, may karapatang gawin kung ano ang gusto niyang gawin. Nasa kaniya 'yung konteksto kung [paano] niya nakita 'yon at wala tayong karapatang sabihin kung mali o tama ang ginawa niya," Diño added.

Aside from saying that women have a right to do whatever they want, she says that she is concerned on how the woman is “suddenly portrayed as a victim”.

She says that only the women that was kissed by Duterte has the right to dictate the context by which the incident happened.

Interior and Local Government Assistant Secretary Marjorie Jalosjos also gave her thoughts towards the issue, saying that Duterte has shown his support for women during his most recent State of the Nation Address.

Jalosjos said that everyone has their own opinion on the matter and that the launching of Cinemarya is very timely, and that the president is on full support of it.

She adds that the president is also intent on localizing the Magna Carta of Women.

She also shares the same sentiments with Dino, saying that the public should respect the reaction of the woman who was kissed .

"Lahat ay may karapatan sa kani-kaniyang opinion, may kanikaniyang pagtingin do'n sa kissing. Nakakatawa man sa ibang tao, sensitibo man ang ibang nakapanood at nag-react dito, lahat naman po kayo ay may karapatan para sa inyong opinion at reaksyon." She said.

Jalosjos refused to give a conclusive opinion towards the action of the president, saying that she is not saying that what he did was wrong nor right.

What she does know, is that since Duterte was still Mayor of Davao he already used “pampakilig” methods in order to wake the crowd.
