Manila, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday pledged to give P25 million a month to the Philippine National Police (PNP) for cops’ hospital bills, as he vowed anew to support the institution that plays a major role in his campaign to fight illegal drugs.

The president announced that cops who are having trouble to pay for their health expenses can go to him, no need to “beg there and steal or borrow.”

“I would like to leave something for all to hear. I am giving you 25 million for medicines and all,” the president said in his speech at the 117th anniversary celebration of the police service in Camp Crame, Quezon City, yesterday.

“Since you put your lives on the line to serve our country and people, it is only just and fair --- just fair that the government takes care of you as well.” he added.

With this, the president also asked the policemen to stay out of corruption practices and serve the country with utmost honesty.

“All that I ask is that we serve our country the utmost good faith. Do not go into corruption. If you think that you cannot survive with the salary, then you are free to go,” the commander-in-chief said.*

"Your duty and mine is to preserve the Republic, and to protect the people. Simple. And that's all there is to it," the president also said.

Meanwhile, Director General Oscar Albayalde also expressed his gratitude towards the president.

"I also take this opportunity today to extend the PNP's gratitude to the President for his recent pledge extending a P25 million monthly support to the PNP's reimbursement of hospitalization expenses." Abayalde said.

The PNP has a lot of injured police personnel every day, since they are the first to respond in crimes and even disasters.

The top cop director said that the monthly donation will go a long way for cops across the country.

"[It] will go a long way in helping ease the financial burden on the shoulders of our police personnel who are hospitalized. Napakalaking tulong po ito sa mga pulis (This is a very big help for our cops)," Albayalde said.
