Opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV expressed confidence that the opposition candidates will give a good fight in the coming 2019 midterm polls.

Trillanes also said he believed the opposition would dominate the next Senate as they will win eight seats in the coming elections due to of what he claimed as President Rodrigo Duterte's decreasing popularity.

“Nakikita ko malaki ang tsansa makapanalo mga eight candidates ng oposisyon. Objectively. Pero kung by May next year talagang bulusok na 'tong si Mr. Duterte, ano na 'to, baka ma-sweep pa,” Trillanes said in an interview with reporters.

Trillanes has also said that the administration bets will have a formidable opponents when the opposition release its senatorial line-up including those from different opposition coalition as they have united.

“Maganda-gandang laban ito sa darating na halalan kasi very, very critical ito for our country. Kailangan isuka ng mga botante ‘yung mga kandidato ni Duterte na nanlinlang lang sa kanila,” he said.

“Well, united na ‘yong opposition and lalabas na ito in the coming weeks para ipresenta ang mga kandidato ng oposisyon. So maganda-gandang laban ito sa darating na halalan."

The Magdalo Partylist senator acknowledge that the victory of the Resistance Opposition would depend if the Filipinos still wanted the policy of the administration on Charter change, Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion, misogyny, and the killings that he said the opposition wanted to stop.

“Sa opposition naman, gusto natin harangin yung mga polisiyang nakasasama sa interes ng taumbayan. Iyang pagtaas ng presyo ng bilihin, tatandaan niyo yung TRAIN hanggang  package 4 yata ‘yan. Ang isang agenda ng opposition ay anti-TRAIN, anti-Cha-cha, anti-EJK, anti-misogyny, anti-corruption, anti-expansion ng China sa West Philippine Sea,” Trillanes said.

Trillanes said, the opposition now have 14-15 names on their shortlist  but they would submit less than 12 to Vice President Leni Robredo, Liberal Party (LP) chair who would have the final say.

“Ang kino-consider, eight, 10, 12. Ako, sabi ko, it’s either 12 or kung gusto nilang bawasan, 10. Recommendatory lang naman kami eh. The final decision would be kay VP Leni,” he said.

While they still undecided running for the 2019 elections, ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and former Interior Secretary, defeated presidential candidate Mar Roxas, Trillanes said they have reserved slots in the opposition’s Senate slate.

“We are reserving a slot for Secretary Mar Roxas. We believe that he will be an asset for the Senate opposition. So tinutulak siya na tumakbo,”

Roxas admitted to reporters at the commemoration of the 35th death anniversary of former Senator Ninoy Aquino that many are encouraging him to run for senator.

Trillanes said Sereno has yet to give a definitive response to appeals for her possible Senatorial bid.

“Wala pa rin tayong nakukuhang definitive statement from CJ Sereno. Hinahayaan natin siyang dumaan sa kanyang sariling decision-making process. But we are also reserving a slot for her,” he said.

When the senator was asked as to why the opposition would not field a complete slate, he said they were still looking for their logistics and resources but nothing has yet finalized.

“Kasi ang tinitignan nila ‘yung logistics, ’yung resoruces. But sabi ko nga, lahat ‘yan up in the air. We don't know what’s the inclination of VP Leni. So kami, we will just give her a shortlist that can enable her to fill up the whole slate na maximum 12. But if she feels na 10 lang ifi-field, eh di 10 lang ifi-field. Pero lagpas lagpas ng 12 yung candidates,” he said.

He further said that the opposition is also working hard on making sure that their candidates will win in the 2019 polls.

“That’s a challenge for us and we will really work double time, triple time to make sure our candidates will win. And ang aming target ay makuha ng oposisyon ang Senado,” he said.

While the former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III said he will actively participate in the senatorial campaign for the opposition's candidates for next year's midterm polls.

Aquino said that for those who agreed and are satisfied with the way President Rodrigo Duterte run the country should vote for the candidates allied with the current administration.

“Kung sang-ayon po tayo sa takbo ng bansa ngayon, iboto po ang kakampi ng administrasyon," Aquino said at the Sto Domingo Church in Quezon City.

But for those who feels otherwise and continue to criticize the policies of the Duterte administration should do more aside from merely voting for candidates of the opposition, should also join in campaigning their slate for the 2019 midterm elections.

"Pero kung di ka sang-ayon, wag niyo lang iboto ang ating mga kandidato, ikampanya mo pa sila, palakasin niyo ang mga magdadala ng tinatawag na checks and balances sa gobyerno,” he added.
