Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, on Tuesday, revealed that the unit designated to neutralize Communist Party of the Philippines’ (CPP) armed wing, New People’s Army (NPA) hit squads shall emerge before the year ends.

Lorenzana added that the vital members of the anti – SPARU (Special Partisan Unit) shall come primarily from the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), amplified by qualified intelligence personnel from Navy, Army, Air Force, and Marines.

Lorenzana, in a special interview with the CNN Philippine’s The Source, said that, “I think now the core of this unit will be (from) ISAFP. Meron namang intel units ang Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines so they could form the core of this anti-SPARU unit.”

The Defense Chief signified his all – out support for the formation of the counter – offensive unit to protect military personnel from the attacks of the NPA hit squads.

“I’m supporting it per se. I support the anti-SPARU unit that will protect our soldiers, but I said let us be very careful in organizing these people. Some quarters are saying we’ll get civilians to do it I think no, this will be very difficult for civilians to do this (as) they might think they have blanket authority to just kill anybody they suspect of being NPA. I want soldiers to be our anti-SPARU unit members and this should be supervised by officers,” Lorenzana explained.

President Rodrigo Duterte previously pondered on the formation of the special action unit following reports that 136 innocent individuals, mostly military men, police and even rebel surrenders’ lives were taken by the rebels in the past 3 years.

Lorenzana’s statement came in contrast with Philippine National Police Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde ‘s earlier claim that the rebel’s infamous hit squad NO LONGER EXISTS.

In an interview with dzBB, Albayalde said, “Right now, we have not monitored (any SPARU presence). There have been instances in the past years and k*ll*ngs recorded, about 136. But we have monitored those and indeed, the SPARU has long ceased to exist.”

The President, on Tuesday said he wanted to organize a “Duterte D*ath Squad” to deal with SPARU members.

“I will create my own SPARU— Duterte D*ath Squad against the SPARU. I will match their talent also for ass*ss*nating people. They will have firearms for sure. That’s my plan,” Duterte said.

“They will do nothing but look for idlers who are prospective New People’s Army members and take them out,” he added.

Albayalde stressed that the Chief Executive may have his own sources to rely on as to the presence of the rebel’s hit squad.

CPP founding chairman Jose Ma. Sison, however, quickly shut down the President’s proposal and said it was to only cover up the current administration’s widespread use of summary executions.
