MANILA – Tropical Storm Fung-wong has strengthened into a severe tropical storm as it continues to move northwestward over the Pacific Ocean, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported on Friday.
Once the weather disturbance enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), it will be given the local name “Uwan.” PAGASA said the storm’s center remains outside the country’s jurisdiction but is expected to gradually intensify while moving closer over the next few days.
Although Fung-wong is not expected to make landfall in the Philippines, the weather bureau warned that it may enhance the northeast monsoon (amihan), bringing occasional rains and rough seas to parts of Northern Luzon.
Fisherfolk and those with small sea vessels are advised to monitor weather updates and avoid venturing into the northern and eastern seaboards where strong waves are expected.
PAGASA said it continues to closely monitor the storm’s movement and will issue updates should there be significant changes in its track or intensity.
