"Nutribun" Makes Its Way Back To Marikina After Decades

Between 1968 and 1970 during the Marcos reign, on of the best things that was implemented was the "Nutribun" the small amazing bread that was envisioned to battle malnutrition. After decades, the "magic bun" just had its comeback.

Feeding program

There are no questions that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but because of different states of life, more and more students are forced to go to school without even eating anything prior. This results to their poor performance and low grades.

On Wednesday, October 16, the famous nutribun made its way back to Marikina. Marikina Mayor marcy Teodoro led the pilot serving of nutribun with malunggay and a glass of milk to over 1,000 students at Parang Elementary School.

Monitoring and study

She noted that not only will the kids be given a bun of bread with a glass of milk, but their weight and performance will be monitored for more than a hundred days. For 4 months, it will be monitored if their performance in school will improve if they are fed in the morning.

“Titingnan natin ang kanilang grades at performance after 120 days kung nag-improve sila sa pag-aaral. Ayon kasi sa mga pag-aaral, may relasyon ang tamang nutrisyon sa performance sa pag-aaral ng mga bata,”

Battle against malnutrition

According to PES Principal Marciana De Guzman, the children will be given food and milk as soon as they enter the school premises early around 7am. She also added that there are 600 malnourished children in their school alone.

“Pagpasok pa lang ng mga bata, seven in the morning, unang ibibigay ng teachers ‘yong nutribun at gatas sa kanila. Mahalaga kasi na ang almusal nila ay nutritious dahil ang breakfast is the most important meal,”

The government plans to serve nutribun to 21,000 public school children when this program has set its course.

Aside from this, the government of Marikina also plans to conduct seminars for parents about the recommended food daily allowance needed by their growing children. This will surely help the children who are used to going to school hungry.
