volunteer din ako, same kami sa accreditation and uniform nakaassign.

Breakfast, lunch and meryenda,” sabi ni Chona Arozado.

“Yes! It’s True!

I just have to see and experience it myself.

I volunteered for this year’s SEA Games as our country is hosting, and I Quote “The Biggest And Grandest SEA Games.” ever in its history.

I was assigned to Accreditation and Uniform as Custodian and was scheduled today starting 8:00am-4:00pm. As I was excited to start my volunteer work, I woke up 5:00 in the morning, prepared and travelled from Mandaluyong To World Trade Center in Pasay City and arrived 7:30 in the morning. To my surprise, there’s no one there but the security personnel. I asked them if there’s already someone from the SEA Games Committee and said there’s none. So I went outside and tried calling my FA Supervisor and said that call time was 8:30am.

I stepped out and tried to look for a nearby restaurant, and got back before 8:30am but still no one’s there to assist. I kept on calling our coordinator and anyone to help but to no avail.

10:30 am: I was able to reach my coordinator and then approached one of the personnel as she instructed, then assigned me to a post that was not discussed. But still I managed to familiarize myself besides it’s just handing over IDs.

The Difficult Part: All the IDs assigned to us are for media personnel, from broadcast to print to digital media, and to our surprise, they are not even sorted out. Some were local media and a few from international media partners. The IDs are not even sorted alphabetically nor by media network or publications. EVERYTHING’S A MESS! I then started classifying all the IDs to make our job easier, but worst is yet to come. Our desk is located just in front of the accreditation office where printing, validating and verifying is happening. The then assigned task to us (which is media and broadcasting) turned out to be an information desk for all people looking for their IDs. Some were atheletes, coordinators, mediamen, and even volunteers.

Due to the number of people approaching our desk, I was not able to notice the time. It is already 30 minutes past 2 in the afternoon and WE HAVEN’T HAD OUR LUNCH. Our FA Supervisor nor her subordinates approached us and asked if we have eaten or not. I believe the food is free but none was given. Our shift ends at 4:00pm but not even any bottled water was provided. My ID was not even provided and also our uniforms. YES! I AM WORKING AS A VOLUNTEER EVEN WITHOUT MY OWN ID.

Even though TIRED and HUNGRY, we still have to assist those people who were looking for their IDs since some of the events are already starting. Everyone’s mad and the place is becoming a disaster.

4:30PM. My co-volunteer and I decided to end our shift as we both have work tonight. We then approached our FA Supervisor to ask permission to go home and that’s the only time she handed me food (as shown below). Not even a single word of appreciation nor apology to what we did and what happened to us.

I am so sorry to the organizers and committee of the SEA Games in the Philippines especially to Secretary Cayetano but even I myself as a volunteer QUIT. The lack of planning and process just shows how unready we are in hosting such grand event. This has long planned but as early as now WE are already a disappointment. I have heard negative comments already about us hosting this event but I still not believed until this day that I experienced it myself.

PS. I still have work tonight at 12:30AM.”
